Nexight (Final Design)

with 2 comments

I created a page that explains the final design of this projects. There you can find all the final videos and explanations in one place. I called the system I’ve designed Nexight:

Nexight (Final Design, descriptions, resources, links and videos)

There is also the final animation of the user interface (you should check out the HighDefinition version to see all details of the interface)

Touch Concept Video Raw

leave a comment »

Here is the first raw version of the full Touchscreen Concept for this project. I rendered it yesterday night, and there is still some quirks, missing screens and no explanation at all. But it was really important for myself to see the whole thing together. It made me realize that there are still small problems and inconsistencies in the interface. Not sure if I am going to be able to change everything, because there is only little time left. Still I think it conveys the concept and idea very well, and that’s the most important.

its pretty hard to see the details of the interface in the low resolution version here on the web. I guess I have to make an extra web-version in the end. also Vimeo somehow stretched the video image. (…a lot of things to fix)

Multitouch Prototype #2

leave a comment »

This is the second iteration of my multitouch prototype. I added a big screen to the setup as it is in my design concept. The big screen shows only the images without any grpahical interface. All GUI and detailed information about the scan is showed on the touch surface.

I still don’t have a projection on the touch surface – but you can see the projection on my laptop screen in this video.

(2 day) Multitouch Prototype

leave a comment »

I decided not to build a full working multitouch-screen-table because it would cost to much time and also I could not travel with it between my two workspaces in Eindhoven, the Netherlands and Umea, Sweden. But I still think this projects needs something to evaluate and test my ideas, so I’ve built this very simple multitouch prototype. I haven’t implemented the projection yet, so its still a multitouch-trackpad and not a full touch screen. But I might add projection to it later on.

I used reacTIvision for finger and fiducial detection. Reactivision sends the data via OSC and I can use vvvv or flash to interpret the data (thats where the fun starts)

First explorations in multitouch

leave a comment »

I took my paper-multitouch-sketches and transfered them into a video-sketch today. It’s still a rough concept and not all my ides work out so well, but while editing the video I already got a ton of new ideas how to change and improve the multitouch-concept. Also before the video I was thinking about adding some graphical user interface (GUI), but now I really like the simplicity of the visuals and I think it is really important for the radiologist not to get distracted by the GUI. That could be the real advantage in a touch interface for the radiologist.

Screen Setups

leave a comment »

While doing the first storyboards I started thinking of the screen setup. Nowadays radiologists normally use 3 screen – 1 for patient data and schedule and 2 for viewing the images. They use this setup because they need high-resolution screens for viewing the images. High resolution screens will get cheaper in the future so I’d like to combine the 3-screen-setup in one big high-resolution screen (possibly with touch recognition). Here are some concepts of how this could look like:

Microsoft Surface for medical applications

leave a comment »

I found two medical related projects for the Microsoft Surface table.

This one was shown at CES 2009. It’s a tool for medical education. It seems like a lot of revolutionary projects in the medical field are done for education (see my post about HeartWorks and the VisualBody). I guess its because real medical applications have to follow a lot of restrictions and need to be carefully tested.

Like HeartWorks, this project also utilizes tangible interactive objects. In this case its a physical model of a brain that can be placed on the table to enrich the brain model with digital data. Of course they use multitouch, all kinds of online communications and information from the cloud.  Also they show a flexible display. That’s cool, but doens’t really make sense.

VitraView by InterKnowlogy is the second medical project for Microsoft Surface I’ve found.
